Creativity is the soul of freedom!

  • This is the first in a series of 4 abstract pen drawings from 1971.

    These are the first pieces of art that came straight out of my brain; most of the previous art up until then had been things that I had drawn while looking at something and trying to draw it exactly as it appeared.

  • This is the second in the series of 4. I was on the road with the band, sitting around our hotel room and they just came out, don't remember what prompted me to begin drawing.

    I used a government issue ballpoint pen that I found in my dads war trunk which he brought home from World War II.

  • This pencil drawing is of my daughter Sarah, she was about 14 at the time I think, may have drawn it as a gift to my parents.

  • This pencil drawing of my family was a Christmas gift to my parents, I was living on The farm in Summertown, TN at the time, living with a vow of poverty, there was no money, so this was something I could do that didn't have a financial cost.

    I ended up drawing 4 of them as Christmas gifts for parents and grandparents that year, prob about 1976 or 77.

  • My employment as state art director began in 1987 as Governor Ned Ray McWherter was elected governor. This pencil drawing of him was completed in about 1988 or 89.

But in the real world, the scenario is:
- “I don’t know what I want, but I’ll know it when I see it.”
- “I like it, but what does it mean?”
- “What would it look like in red?”
- “I know that’s what I asked for, but I don’t like it.”
